S/H Villa

Design Studio Earth

University of Melbourne | Instructor: Sambit Datta | Individual Work | Fall 2014

The project is situated in a mountainous environment, and design brief requires both living and working spaces in a villa. My goal is to create a sequential space that occupants in a villa can have a dynamic interaction with different spaces, and this interaction will achieved through combining Interior and exterior experience. From the exterior, workspace and living space have a shared facade, which is also the main entrance. And two major programs ramify from the shared facade. Also, to provide a better experience of living space, the living room is suspended from ground by half meters to take advantage of unique viewing created by natural landscape. On the other side, the interior creates different spatial experiences to occupants by altering the material and shape of walls.

Details Follow Function

From workspace to living space, the form and space are changed according to different atmosphere. Studio workshop is designed as a more efficient driven space which gradually transfers to a more movement and dynamic space as living space in the house. The transformation of two programs is reflected in circulation, wall finish, ceiling and roof design.

Transformation In Spaces

Two programs are merged through a series of transformation, which arrived in an asymmetrical plan linking two programs by an intersection space. The elements of interior space is defined by the activities and movement in each space.
